Rita Assor, a pattern designer, photographer and creative director from Tartu, celebrates the eleventh year of her design studio MIURIO this year. With the beginning of the autumn season, a collection of wool mufflers from the works of the famous artist Jüri Arrak will reach fashion and art lovers.
The design studio MIURIO was started from the love for art and pattern by designer Rita Assor. The woman, who previously worked as a project manager in a bank, found inspiration to start her own business and realize her interest in art after the birth of her second child. Over eleven years, the studio’s range of designs and products has grown significantly, ranging from silk and wool accessories, to handmade rugs, eco-wallpaper and art projects. Cooperation with art museums, artists and fashion designers has been by offering production of silk scarves and digital printing on silk fabrics.
Jüri Arrak’s art woven into wool accessories
This autumn, the designer surprises with a bold and recognizable collection of Jüri Arrak’s works, which are woven into wool mufflers and transcend vibrancy in six color ways. The mufflers’ patterns are based on three works by Jüri Arrak: “People” (1966), “Viewers” (1970) and “Moses in desert” (1990). The last of them was presented as a graphic to Pope Francis who visited Estonia in 2018.
“The scarves are machine-woven, full wool, of high-quality and produced in Italy, in cooperation with our long-term partner. The featured colors include red, aubergine, and teal, as well as grayish-black shades. You can also find abstract figures in these patterns. The pattern of the mufflers is on both sides, along with the name of the artist and the artwork featured,” explains Assor.
She adds: “Our goal is for Jüri Arrak’s art to live on and be worn by anyone interested and appreciating Estonian art classics.”
The collection of wool mufflers is also the company’s newest product, and the first designed mufflers will arrive to Estonia from Italy in the second half of October. “At the moment, four scarf designs have been developed, and the fifth one is still in the process,” says Assor excitedly.
“My collaboration with Jüri Arrak began at the beginning of last year, when Jüri’s wife wrote to me, who luckily found my contact and inquired about the possibility of producing silk scarves with the artist’s works. We got to know each other better, and I managed to meet the legendary artist myself four times. He visited my studio and I was at the opening of his last exhibition and in his atelier,” says the designer.
“I think that Jüri Arrak wanted someone to take over the implementation of the design side of his art and bring the works closer to people through new angles,” says Assor, who is happy about the brand new and soon-to-be-available collection. “Our cooperation with Kai Arrak has continued since then, and we hope to bring other projects to people in the future, for example, the exhibition of Jüri Arrak’s paintings in the form of handmade carpets”, she looks enthusiastically into the future.
A collection of wool mufflers featuring Arrak’s artwork will be available in early November. The client event introducing the collection will take place at Tallinn Design House on November 2, 2023.
